Takadachi Yoshitsune Hall

Takadachi Yoshitsune Hall (高館義経堂) is a temple located in Hiraizumi. Takadachi is where Minamoto no Yoshitsune stayed at Hiraizumi. It is also his last place where he committed Seppuku. The temple was built 4th lord of Date of Sendai in 1683. On the mountain you can have a great view of Kinugawa River.

Admission: 200 yen, junior and elementary 50 yen. There is a group discount from 30.
Open: 8:30 to 16:30. From Nov 5 to April 4: 8:30 to 16:00.
There is a parking.

0. at Ichinoseki Station.
1. use JR Tohoku Line to Hiraizumi (9 min.)
2. walk north (20 min.)

Takadachi Yoshitsune Hall

Minamoto no Yoshitsune (源義経) is one of the most famous war hero in Japan. He was born in 1159 as the 9th son of Minamoto no Yoshitomo, the lord of Genji clan. After his father was killed he moved to here in Hiraizumi and grown up under Fujiwara no Hidehira.

Genpei War started in 1180, Yoshitsune became one of General of Yoritomo, his elder brother and the lord of Genji, and defeated Heishi clan. However, after he defeated Heishi clan, he became too powerful for Yoritomo. Yoritomo decided to kill Yoshitsune before he betrayed Yoritomo and destroy Kamakura Government.

Yoshitsune escaped to Hiraizumi, but Yasuhira, 4th lord of Oshu Fujiwara couldn't stand the pressure of Kamakura and killed Yoshitsune. Yoshitsune committed Seppuku here at Takadachi. He was 31 years old.
