Kamigamo Shrine

Kamigamo Shrine (上賀茂神社) is one of the oldest shrines in Kyoto. It was established in 678 by Emperor Tenmu. It is the top of Kamo Shrines in Japan and the top shrine of Kyoto. The legend sad The first emperor Jinmu called Kamowake Ikazuchinomikoto. It is registered as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main hall is registered as the National Treasure built-in 1863. There are many traditional buildings.

Record said Kamigamo Shrine was established in the time of the first Emperor. The god, Kamowakeikazuchino Okami, descented at Mt. Kamo.

Kamigamo Shrine is one of the oldest shrines in Kyoto. Kamo clan was a very powerful family since ancient times. Since the Heian period, many people including the imperial families highly respected.
