Both the checkpoint and post station were often damaged from earthquakes and tsunami, which led to them both being moved to different locations. The current location was established after the earthquake of 1707.
Arai Sekisho
... is one of the 4 major checking points of Tokaido and Nakasendo. It was a very important to check out all travelers on Tokaido. Arai Sekisho was built in 1600, and the current one is 1855. It is the only remaining Sekisho Building in all Japan. It displays the all the officers of Sekisyo. During the Edo period, Shogun highly controlled the importing guns and escaping ladies.
The museum displays many old travelers carrying items.
Hotel Kinokuniya
... is one of the traditional houses of Araijuku, Shizuoka Pref. Araijuku is the 31st post town of Tokaido Road. Kinokuniya was the high-rank hotel that the family of Shogun Stayed.
Kinokuniya running their business over 250 years. This building was constructed in 1874. It has all features of Edo style architecture. You can feel the Edo period travelers life here.
