Ashikaga School (足利学校) is the oldest school established in Japan. It is located in Ashikaga, Tochigi. In 1487, it appears in record at first by the letter of Uesugi Norisane. During the Sengoku Period, 3,000 students studied at this school. The gates, gardens, and buildings have been remaining since 17th century.

Admission: 400 yen for adult, 210 yen for high school, free for younger.

Ashikaga School

Ashikaga School is the oldest school established in Japan. There is no definite record when this school was established, but historians said it could be established in Nara or Heian period. The first time it appears at the record is the letter of Uesugi Norisane in 1487.

In 1549, Francisco de Xavier visited this school and acclaimed Ashikaga school to the world as the best and most famous university in Japan. At this moment, the
school had 3,000 students.

At the end of Edo Period, the school was closed and finished its assignment.

The Gate
There are three gates in Ashikaga School and all of them are built in 1668.
