Detailed Travel Guide

Birthplace of Shinsengumi

Yagi family was the strong Samurai family in Mibu area. Their house is also famous for the birthplace and office of Shinsengumi. The gate of his house was built in 1804.

In 1863, 14th Tokugawa Shogun, Iemochi visited Kyoto. However, Shogun had never visited Kyoto during Edo period for 230 years, except first 3 Shogun. Therefore, there was no rule to protect Shogun.

Kiyokawa hachiro assembled 234 Ronin at Edo. They traveled to Kyoto in February 23. However, Kiyokawa changed his mind instead of protecting Shogun, he asked Ronin to protect the emperor. Therefore, Shogun ordered to retreat them back to Edo.

However, 13 Roshi stayed at Kyoto. They offered their service to protect Shogun. One group is Serizawa Kamo and other 4 of Mito Roshi. Other group is Kondo Isami and 6 warriors of his Dojo, Shieikan. Warriors of Shiekan were originally farmers, Samurai, merchant and others. They became followers of Kondo after they fought him. These 13 people stayed at Kyoto. They didn't want to give up the opportunity to serve for Shogun. So, they made an agreement and offered their service to Matsudaira Katamori, chief officer of Guard. Katamori accepted their offer and put them directly under his company. There became the last but Samurai under Aizu Domain.

They hang the sign at the gate of this house. It said, "the office of Shinsengumi under Matsudaira (松平肥後守預新撰組宿)."

Harada and Okiata, looked at the sign deeply. However, the group of Serizawa Kamo never kept the rule and agreement of Shinsengumi. Their brutality put Shinsengumi's reputation down. People of Kyoto expected that Katamori re-organized the security of Kyoto to safe, but Kamo actually break the safety of Kyoto. He dropped Katamori's reputation as well. Katamori ordered Kondo to kill Kamo and other 4 Roshi.

Kondo, Hijikata or Okita were one of the best sword masters, but Kamo was also one of the best in time.

At the night of September 18, 6 masked assassins entered from that door. They wearied masks because Kondo wanted to take this assassination out on Chosyu. He was cut twice at here.

However, Kamo was master of Shintomunenryu. He fought with his Wakizashi, and run away to next room. He tripped with a small desk and fell on the floor. Then, he was killed.

After Kamo and other Roshi was executed, Kondo took a lead of the command of Shinsengumi.
