Shizuoka Sengen Shrine is one of the oldest shrine in Shizuoka. There are two main shrines in Sengen Shrine. One is Kambe Shrine, and the other is Asama Shrine. They both shares with the same building. Kambe Shrine was established over 2,100 years ago. It enshrines Oonamuchinomikoto, the founder of Japan. Asama Shrine enshrines Konohanasakuyahimenomikoto, the goddess of Mt. Fuji. This shrine was enshrines in 901 by the imperial order of Emperor Daigo. The goddess was invited from Sengen Daisha.
Sengen Shrine was highly respected by Shogun Government since Kamakura period. Because Tokugawa Ieyasu lived in Shizuoka after his retirement of Shogun, Tokugawa Government was the great sponsor of Sengen Shrine. The main worshipping building, Shaden, was constructed in the middle of 19the century with the sponsorship of Tokugawa government. It started in 1804 and spent over 60 years. It is the Sengen style building and one of the best building in Japan.
There are many different gods are enshrined in this place. Today, many people worship this shrine and pray their own success and wishes.
-Romon Gate-
Constructed in 1815.
-Shaden-
Sengen Style building constructed in 19th century. The building was sponsored by Tokugawa Government, and spend 60 years. Many famous carving artists, painters and other architectures joined this construction. Therefore, the carving and structure of this Shaden is one of the masterpiece. It is about 25m tall great building.
-Ootoshimiya Shrine-
Established about 1700 years ago. The god of the industry.
-Sukunahikona Shrine-
The building is registered as historical asset. Enshrines the god of medicine, craft works and wisdom.
-Tamaboko Shrine-
God of wisdom and education.
-The Sacred Horse-
Made by Hidari Jingoro who is the best carving artiest in Edo period. The famous sleeping cat of Nikko Toshogu was also designed by him.
-Yachihoko Shrine-
God of Sports and Budo. The building is registered as historical asset. It has beautiful carving art.
-Hayama Shrine-
Constructed in 1835. The building is registered as historical asset.
