Yamagata castle is one of the large flatland castle located in the middle of Yamagata. It was used to be a castle of Shiba clan, but current structure was constructed by Mogami Yoshiaki (1546 - 1614.). Yoshiaki is one of great Sengoku Daimyo, the feudal lord, of Tohoku region. He survived through the Sengoku period and won the great land of Dewa, current Yamagata prefecture. It was used to be 5th largest castle in Japan, and the biggest castle in Tohoku region.
There is a beautiful statue of Yoshiaki at the behind of The Eastern Otemon gate.
