Tsuwano (津和野) is one of the best castle towns located in south-western Shimane Prefecture. There are many traditional houses including Samurai Houses and buildings. Especially, Tonomachi Street has many Samurai houses and gates remained there. It is also considered as little Kyoto of Sanin area. It is designated as a group of preserved important cultural buildings.

Tsuwano Town
Yorokan Samurai School
Yorokan Samurai School(津和野藩校養老館) is one of the remaining Samurai School buildings located in Tsuwano, Shimane Prefecture. It was established in 1786 by the 8th lord of Tsuwano Castle. The gate is also the building of the school. The right side is for spear training and the left side is for sword fighting. There is a storage for the books. There was also another building for Jujutsu, Iai, and literature. Many famous novelists, Mori Ogai studied here.

Ooka House Gate
The building was constructed in 1919. This building was constructed as the town center. The gate was constructed in the Edo period.

The gate of Taga House
Constructed after 1853. Taga Family is one of the top-rank Samurai of Tsuwano Castle. This gate has the basic feature of Samurai House's gate in the Edo period.

Mori Ogai Old House
The birthplace of Mori Ogai (森鴎外旧宅) is one of the traditional houses located in Tsuwano, Shimane Prefecture. It was constructed in 1854. Mori Ogai is one of the famous writers in the early 20th century. He lived here until the age of 10.
