The House of Saigo Tanomo (The last principal Retainer of Aizu Domain)
The original house was burned down 140 years ago during Boshin War in 1868. However, because the blueprint of the house remained, they could built exactly the same house. This residence has the rooms as they would be during the Edo period, including furniture, household effects and amour.
The families of Saigo Tanomo committed suicide in their house.
-Kitchen-
Here the meals for many people were prepared. There are strong and thick wooden cross beams tosupport the heavy snowfall.
-The Guest Room-
This room was used for only the lord of Aizu domain. It simply yet dighified. There is a beautiful garden in the front.
-Kawaya (the lavatory)-
Placed next to the guest room, is the lavatory. Directly underneath the toilet is a wooden box filled with sand and wheels. This could be pulled out so the staff could check the health of samurai.
Nakahata Jinya
The judge, Gunjiro Matsudaira, lived in this room. He was direct retainer of Shogun. Built around 160 years ago. The house was moved from Nakahata village and restored here. It is designated as an important piece of cultural property.
Tea Ceremony House
Shoan, the son of Rikyu, introduced "Sado" here in Aizu. He built a tearoom in Tsuruga Castle. It's been moved from the castle.
Kuyoutei (restaurant)
...offers the local and seasonable food of Aizu.
