Amano Iwato Shrine

Amano Iwato Shrine (天岩戸神社) is located Takachiho, Miyazaki Prefecture. It enshrines the cave of Amano Iwato which appears in Japanese myth. In the myth, Amaterasu Omikami, the prime god of Japan, hided in this cave. There are two shrines and both enshrines Amaterasu Omikami.

Make appointment at the office for visiting Amano Iwato Cave.

Amano Iwato Shrine

Enshrines: Amaterasu Omikami.

the cave of Amano Iwato appears in both Kojiki and Nihonshoki. They are the oldest Japanese historical records, which are also considered as the Japanese myth. Amaterasu Omikami, the prime god of Japan, hided in this cave when her brother Susano no Mikoto visit the heaven. However, because she was the god of Sun, the world lost the light and many disasters happened. So, other gods had a party to let her out from the cave.
