Dewa Sanzan Shrine

Dewa Sanzan Shrine (出羽三山神社) is the unified shrine of all Yudonosan Shrine, Gassan Shrine and Dewa Shrines. It is located on the top of Mt. Haguro. Dewa Sanzan is the 3 sacred mountains for Shugendo located in the middle of Yamagata Prefecture. It is one of the oldest Buddhism in Tohoku. It was used to be a practice place of for Shugendo for long time. Today, many people still worship this mountains. There are many great historical buidlings and one of them is designated as the national tresure of Japan.

There are parking and restroom.
You can also visit top of the mountain by car.

Access
0. at Sakata Station.
1. use JR Uetsu Line to Tsuruoka Station.
2. use local bus to Hagurosan.

Dewa Sanzan Shrine

Dewa Sanzan is the name of three sacred mountains: Mt. Haguro (414m), Mt. Gassan (1984m) , Mt. Yudono (1504m). They are the sacred mountains of the land of Dewa in ancient time.

The legend said, in the time of 32nd Emperor Sushun (593ACE), his royal price Hachiko traveled to Dewa and he practiced Shugendo. When he was practicing hard Shugendo, the divine crow appeared and lead him to Mt. Haguro as the sacred mountains. He practiced at this mountain and after the many years of hard practice, he finally found the god of Dewa in this mountain, and established the shrine. Dewa Sanzan respects the price as the founder and enshrines in this shrine.

After that, Dewa Sanzan has been highly respected for imeprial families, Samurai and all other civilians.

Zuishin mon Gate
Constructed in early 18th century.

Suga Falls
It was used for Misogi, cleansing Takigyo.

Jijisugi
Over 1,000 years old Cedar tree.

Five Stories Pagoda
Hagurosan 5 Stories Pagoda is the national treasure of Japan. It is located in Mt. Haguro, Yamagata Prefecture. It was constructed in around 1375 by Muto clan. Hagurosan 5 stories pagoda is 24m tall.

Stone Steps
2446 steps and 1.7km long.
This main leading road is surrounded by over 500 years old Cedars.
It was used to be a practice place of for Shugendo for long time.
Today, many people still worship this mountains.

Hachiko Shrine
It enshrines the founder of Dewa Shrine.
In 593, Prince Hachiko found 3 mountains and established the shrines.
Legend said, the Yatagarasu, the divine crow, lead him to this mountain.
There are beautiful carvings of Divine crow on this buildings which are very rare.

Sanjingosaiden hall
combined 3 shrines (Haguro, Gassan, Yudonosan)

This shrine was constructed in 1818. It is about 28m tall and 24m wide.
It is beautiful red shrine that is designated as national cultural important assets.
Because Mt. Gassan and Mt. Yudono will be closed in winter,
people worship this shrine as visiting all of 3 in the winter.

the Bell Tower
It is the national important cultural assets.

Toshogu Shrine
It was constructed in 1645 enshrines Ieyasu.
The history of Dewa still lives in this mountain.
