Futarasan Shrine was established in 767. It is the first Shrine of Shimotsuke land. Futarasan Shrine was highly respected as "Daikoku-sama of Nikko." Comparing to Nikko Toshogu Shrine that has many excellent buildings, Fuarasan Shrine has the beauty of the harmony of history and nature. The sacred area of Futarasan Shrine consists from all Nikko mountains including Kegon Falls, and that make it 2nd largest shrine in Japan.
Gohonsha, the main shrine, is located in the middle Nikko city. All of the buildings in Gohonsya are registered as the cultural and historical important assets and the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main building was constructed in 1619 by 2nd Tokugawa Shogun, Hidetada. It is the oldest building in Nikko.
