Hananoiwaya Shrine

Travel Information

Hananoiwaya Shrine (花窟神社) is one of the oldest shrine in Japan. It is located in Kumano, Mie Prefecture. This shrine appears in Japanese Myth. Legend said, Izanaminomikoto was buried under a huge rock in here. It has been highly respected as the sacred place for long time. This shrine is registered as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There is a parking and restroom.
There is a small shopping male in front of the Shrine.

Hananoiwaya Shrine

Enshrines:
Izanami no Mikoto.
Kagutsuchi no Mikoto

In Japanese Myth, Izanami, the mother god, died after she delivered Kagutsuchi, the god of fire. She was buried under the rock of this shrine. There is no shrine for worshipping. The rock itself is the sacred matter of this shrine. The rock is about 45m tall.
