Itsukushima Shrine was established in 593 by Saeki no Kuramoto. In 1168, Taira no Kiyomori built and constructed beautiful shrines. The current structure of Itsukushima Shrine was designed by Kiyomori. Many emperors, imperial families and nobles worshiped this shrine. Therefore, many architectural design of Kyoto was taken to this shrine. Even after the fall of Taira clan, it was respected by many Buke (warrior class).
Kairo : the galleria.
Itsukushima Shrine consist several shrines, and because they are built on the beach which completely sink during high tide, those shrines are connected by the galleria with arcade and bridges. They are also registered as the national treasure. Their floors are made from wood. There are little spaces between each wooden board to prevent the shrines from floating.
Gohonsha: the main shrine.
It is Hiwadabuki style and front side has diamond shape Koshi gate. It is consisted with three shrines, Heiden, Haiden, Haraiden. All of them are registered the national treasure.
Takabutai: the high stage.
Taira no Kiyomori moved the dance of Shitennoji temple of Osaka to Itsukushima shrine. This dance is still played at this stage. This stage is also registered as the natioal treasure of Japan.
Madourosha: the guest shrine.
This is located right side of the main shrine. It is also first shrine to worship from the entrance. Also, all the ceremonies of Itsukushima Shrine start from here. It is also the national treasure.
Otorii: The great gate.
It is 8th Torii built in 1875. It is 16m tall, and 24m wide. The sign was written by Arisugawanomiya taruhito.
