Kanegasaki Castle

Travel Information

Kanegasaki Castle (金ヶ崎城) is a ruins of a hilltop castle located in Tsuruga, Fukui. The top of hill is about 86m high and located on the side of Tsuruga Bay. It was built in Genpei War in 12th century. This castle was used by the ballte of Taira no Michimori and Kiso Yoshinaka. In Sengoku Period, Toyotomi Hideyoshi brought up the rear for the battle of Kanegasaki. Hideyoshi risked his life to accomplish this mission to save his lord Nobunaga. He succeeded and his career in Nobunaga's command improve dramatically.

Kanegasaki Castle

Type: Hilltop castle.
Built in: late 12th century by Taira no Michimori.
Class: Ruins.

It remains Main bailey, Tsukimi Keep, gates and moats.

In 1336, this castle was used by Nitta Yoshisada for the battle between Ashikaga Takauji. It was defeated in 1337, and the son of Yoshisada and the prince Takayoshi died at this castle.

In 1570, when Nobunaga was invading Echizen, Asakura clan, his alliance Azai Nagamasa betrayed Nobunaga and attacked him. Toyotomi Hideyoshi brought up the rear for the battle of Kanegasaki. Hideyoshi risked his life to accomplish this mission to save his lord Nobunaga. He succeeded and his career in Nobunaga's command improve dramatically.
