Kita-Kamakura Zen Walk (北鎌倉散策) is one of the most interesting walks around Kamakura. Especially, who is very interested in Zen and Kamakura Arts, this walk will visit many Zen Temples in Kamakura. The strolling takes about 3 hours including the time in each temple.

Tourist Info.
There is no parking. Better to use the JR Yokosuka Line and start from Kita-Kamakura Station.

Kita-Kamakura Zen Walk
Start at Kitakamakura Station.

Emgakuji Temple
Engakuji temple (円覚寺) is Rinzai Buddhism Temple which originally built by Tokimune Hojo. is one of the most important Zen Buddhist temple complexes in Japan and is ranked second among Kamakura's Five Mountains. The temple was founded in 1282 by a Chinese Zen monk at the request of the then ruler of Japan, the regent Hōjō Tokimune after he had repelled a Mongolian invasion in the period 1274 to 1281. Tokimune Hojo is also known as the Zen master, so Engakuji temple is very famous for zen ( 禅). There are 18 brunch temples, tea house and gardens.

Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine
Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine (鶴岡八幡宮) is one of the three major Hachimangu located in Kamakura. It is the most popular spot in Kamakura, especially, Yabusame in September is very famous. Tsurugaoka Hachimangu was built in 1063 and became the capital and center of Kamakura Government established by Minamoto no Yoritomo.
