Shitennoji Temple

Shitennoji(四天王寺) is one of the oldest temples located in Osaka. It was established in 593 by Prince Shotoku. It appears in Nihonshoki the oldest record in Japan. The central structure called "Garan" is the same as it was established. So, it represents the old temple in the 6th century in Japan. Many of the original buildings have been lost, but some of them are very old. It's been the center of Buddhism for many years, Heian period to the Edo period. Today, it's still popular and respected.

Shitennoji Temple
Shitennoji Temple is one of the oldest temples located in the central Osaka.It is Wa Shu Style Buddhism. It is one of the 7 temples that established by Prince Shotoku in 6th century. Its establishment appears in Nihonsyoki, the oldest Japanese record. when prince Shotoku and Soga clan attacked Mononobe clan, prince Shotoku made Shitenno Statues and pray for Soga's victory. After the victory, he promised to build Temples here. That was the beginning of the temple.

During Heian Period, 8th to 12th century, Buddhism became very popular in Japan. Because this temple was established by Prince Shotoku who brought Buddhism to Japan, Shitennoji becomes the center of Japanese Buddhism.

For many years, most of the old buildings have been lost, but the structure, the positions of the buildings, is the same as the original. Especially, the central Garan, is the same and you can see how was the Buddhism temple in the ancient period of Japan.

Today, it is still one of the most popular temples in Japan and many people visit here for any events.
