Takaosan Fire-walking Monks (高尾山火渡り祭) happens at the 2nd Sunday of March. It is one of the biggest Shugendo events in Takaosan Yakuoin Temple. This fire-walking is also open for audience. After the monks walked on the fire, you can also walk on the fire.

There is a parking, but it will be so many people join. So, we recommend to use public transportation.

0. at Hachioji.
1. use JR Chuo Line to Takao (4 min.)
2. use Keio Line to Takaosanguchi (2 min.)
3. walk north (10 min.)

Takaosan Fire-walking Monks

Fire-walking is one of Shugendo practice of Shingon Mikkyo Buddhism. Practicing with fire will purify body and soul, and pray for the world peace, long live, protecting from disasters, and avoiding traffic accidents.

All people who want to join fire-walking can join after the monks. There is a line for the audience who want to join.

You can buy wish making wood bars at the temple (200 yen)

-Ajimon- The entrance.
-Daidoji shotai- traditional escorting of main priest.
-Hikirikaji- a ritual of purifying the soul of monks by the wisdom of Kongo.
-Tokogata- a ritual of observing Dainichinyorai.
-Shimpu- sacred axe.
-Hoken- sacred sword.
-Houkyu- sacred bow.
-Gaimon- reading wish.
-Aka Tenka- ignition.
-Sange Bontenharai- purifying the rituals by the power of Bonten.
-Yukaji- purifying with boiled water.
-Kashosanmaihyohaku- reading pray.
-Shoujouharai- purifying fire.
-Kashosanmai- fire-walking.
-Goshinhiwatari- fire-walking for audience.
