Before enter

Take off coat, hat, gloves, and muffler at the outer gate before you ring the bell. If you keep wearing them and meet the house owner, it will let them think that they had to wait outside in such a cold weather. Also, put them back on after you went out of the house, unless they "please wear them".

Inside the gate

Close the door completely and say "Ojamashimasu (for thank you for inviting me your house)." Make sure you have to close the door completely before say this. Wait until the owner say "Dozo (Please)," then you take off your shoes. When you take off your shoes, DO NOT turn around and show your back on them. Put your shoes side and align well.
