Great Edo Style Post Town

Arimatsu (有松) is one of the Edo Style Town located in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. Arimatsu was used to be a post town of Tokaido Road. There are many traditional houses still remaining here. Because of the beautiful scenery with many classic houses, this place is registered as the Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Therefore, you can walk through the time of Edo period. Arimatsu is also known as Arimatsu Shibori. It is tie-dyeing cloth printing that is mostly used for Yukata. Those traditional houses are made from those merchants who produce Arimatsu Shibori fabrics.

Arimatsu was built in 1608 as the new post town of Tokaido Road between Chiryu juku and Narumi juku. During the Edo period, this town was flourished as the town of Arimatsu Shibori that is the beautiful tie-dyeing cloth for Yukata. Almost all of the village were reduced to ashes in 1784 but afterward Arimatsu restored with fire-proof houses of wood as seen today. The buildings along the road were all shibori shops in the Yedo era. Because of those fire-proof houses, there are many traditional houses are still remaining here.

Oka House
Constructed in late 19th century.

Kozuka House
Constructed in 1862. The oldest fire-proof house in Arimatsu. It has Udatsu Walls, Koshi Windows, and Gypsum-plaster Walls. It was used to be the wholesale store of Arimatsu Shibori.
