Hirado Castle

Hirado Castle (平戸城) is one of the hilltop castle located in Hirado, Nagasaki Prefecture. It is chosen as one of the 100 best castles in Japan. It was constructed in 1599 by Matsuura clan. This castle is very strong because it is surrounded by sea. There are the gate, tower, stone walls and baileys remaining in original building.

Admission: 510 yen for adult, 300 yen for highschool student, 200 yen.
There is a group disscount.

Hirado Castle
Type: Hilltop Castle
Built in: 1599 by Matsuura Shigenobu.
Class: Reconstructed.

Hirado Castle is a hilltop castle. In 1599, Matsuura Shigenobu was given the land of Hirado by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and built this castle. However, he destroyed this castle in 1613 by himself.

In 1702, 4th lord of Matsuura clan restored this castle. It was very rare for Shogun to give feudal lord permission to reconstruct the castle. However, Hirado is very important to protect Japan from China, therefore Shogun allowed him to built castle.

Kitakoguchi Gate

Tanuki Keep
Original Structure of Hirado Castle.

Tenshu-kaku, Main Tower
Reconstructed 1962. It displays many treasures of Matsuura clan and great view of sea.
