Tokyo Tower(東京タワー) is a communications tower with two observation decks and souvenir shops in Tokyo. Tokyo Tower is 333 metres tall making it the tallest self-supporting steel structure in the world and the tallest artificial structure in Japan. It weighs 4,000 tons. Built in 1958. In compliance with air safety regulations it is painted white and international orange. Antenna leasing is the tower's main source of revenue together with tourism. Over 150 million people have visited the tower since its opening. There is a 4-story building directly under the tower with a wax museum, restaurants and souvenir shops.
There are two observation decks. The 2-story Main Observatory is located at 150 metres, while the smaller Special Observatory stands at 250 metres.
The main purpose of the tower is actually support for various antenna. Originally built solely for television broadcasting, radio antenna were later installed. The tower broadcasts signals for Japanese media services such as NHK, TBS and Fuji TV. On Wednesday and Thursday nights performers give live shows against the night scape of Tokyo from the Main Observatory Deck. On Friday nights there is an open-air DJ time on the entire Main Observatory Deck and guests can request tracks to be played.
